We received the 2014 Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service as testimony to the commitment of our people and the positive impact of our work.

GHR operates an active volunteering programme and recruits volunteers to assist with the Duty Advice Scheme (DAS) based at Woolwich County Court and to help with our office advice services.

All volunteers undertake an intensive training programme and then receive support from staff and experienced volunteers to complete the practical aspects of their training.

GHR volunteers gain invaluable experience and a useful insight into legal practice in the not-for-profit sector.  That experience is beneficial for career development and has helped many volunteers gain full-time employment.

The contribution of volunteers at GHR has been considerable and has been recognised by the profession in a number of ways, such as a GHR volunteer winning the 2004 Legal Aid Lawyer of the Year awards and another being shortlisted in the Young Barrister category at the 2012 LALYs.

GHR offers expenses payments to volunteers and provides references for all volunteers who complete the training programme
