Our History

We were set up in 1983 by tenants’ associations and housing workers in the London Borough of Greenwich with a shared vision that everyone in Greenwich and the surrounding areas should have access to specialist housing legal advice and justice – regardless of income. For over 30 years we have been providing housing legal advice and legal representation to local people who are without the means to pay for it.

Our main office is based in Woolwich and we have a second office in Bromley. We do not provide drop-in advice and we see people in person at one of our outreach locations or by pre-arranged appointment.

We are a registered charity.  Our advice services are accredited with the Legal Aid Agency through the Specialist Quality Mark and our solicitors are regulated by the Solicitors Regulatory Authority. Greenwich Housing Rights is also registered with the Information Commissioners Office to protect any personal data we hold.

The changes to funding legal services leave many people in our communities at risk of being locked out of legal advice and justice, simply because they can’t afford a lawyer.

More than ever people need our help. Problems are complex, civil Legal Aid fees have not been increased for 28 years, leading to the reduction of providers by 59% over the last 10 years, drastically reducing access to justice for the poorest members of society. Legal Advice services all over the country have been closing due to lack of funding, but they have never been so needed. We are therefore incredibly grateful to our supporters, volunteers, funders and sponsors whose generosity means we’re able to help local people get justice at some of the most difficult times in life.

Thank you.
